Heater core is possible, coolant could be leaking externally onto engine and giving off that smell. Ruptured, cracked or leaking bypass hose; Ruptured, cracked or leaking heater hose; Worn or damaged radiator cap; Rusted, corroded, or damaged radiator may be leaking antifreeze/coolant; Loose, damaged, or faulty radiator drain plug; Worn or damaged cooling fan motor or circuit; Thermostat stuck closed; Cracked or leaking water outlet/hose; Damaged, worn or leaking water pump; Leaking or defective heater control valve; Freeze plugs are cracked or leaking. to smell burning anti freeze it would need to be leaking onto engine. most likely a small leak in a coolant hose somewhere, and even if it is heater core , it is sure not going to cost 500 bucks a heater core doesnt even cost 100 bucks to buy and they are easy to install
Burning antifreeze has a rubber like smell. Some people think it smells sweet with a tint of rubber smell mixed into it.
Does it smell like burning antifreeze? Usally it means that the heater-core is going bad. If you do not service it it can be a lot worse. You will end up with Anitfreeze all over you passenger side floor board.

Could be a few things. Does it leak antifreeze? if so, fix the part that leaks. If not, you could have coolant mixing with oil inside the engine, which burns it. check your spark plugs. If they are white, you are probably burning antifreeze - fix immediately. your exhaust will smell "sweet" as well if you are burning antifreeze.
possibly a leaking heater core look for antifreeze dripping into the interior of the vehicle. usually it is the core or hose connected to the heater core.
it's a sweet smell, but it's a nasty smell. it smells like burning coffee and antifreeze. sounds weird but that's pretty much what it smells like
The smell of antifreeze is very strong and distinct, it does not take much of a leak to smell it. The radiator could still be full and have a small leak. I would check for antifreeze dripping onto the exhaust or on the engine block because when it is hot the smell is much more noticeable from the fumes.

if you can smell antifreeze, you have an antifreeze leak somewhere. you need to clean engine then look for coolant . it will generally pool on ground under vehicle unless it is leaking onto engine and burning off. note that the coolant will run so you may have to trace back to the actual leak. check all coolant fittings, such as hoses and check area round water pump.
