Idle speed incorrect , fuel filter clogged , fault in fuel system , faulty emissions system components , faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs , vacuum leak at the thottle body , intake manifold or vacuum hoses
Why would it stall or almost stall in Reverse but not in Drive? How long since it's received a tune-up and thorough check-up? How is the compression?
A car might stall when shifting from park to reverse if the idle is set too low. It is also possible that the engine stalls because it is not fully warmed up before shifting from park to reverse.
Because reverse is a lower ratio gear than drive and puts less load on the engine.
No, that would indicate transmission problems, is it a standard or and auto?
transmission filter not properly seated in the valve body, causing it to stall when engaging reverse gear, wouldnt have believed it if i personally hadnt experienced the exact same problem myself.
could possibly be the torque convertor. wiil it go if you give it some gas going from neutral to reverse or does it still stall ? check shift linkage for pinching a wire when shifted , good luck !
I'm no mechanic, BUT that happened on my Taurus when the fuel pump was not functioning properly. Best to take it in.
If it is a standard transmission, you would need to slowly let out the clutch while backing up.
How would you get your car in and out of your driveway? How would you get out of a parking stall unless you pulled through and there was no curb or car blocking you? It is not uncommon to find yourself in a tight area where all you can do is reverse to get out while driving. I would say it is not safe.
* cause it needs to be put in drive to go forward
your fuel pump can be broken or your fuel injectors...
This happened to me on a 1986 cutlass 2.5. A wire was shorting out going to the map sensor and only did it in reverse. The bracket on the alternator had rubbed a hole and only grounded when the motor moved, when placed in reverse. I fixed it temporary with electrical tape.
