If it occurs suddenly, for no reason, it may be a neurological issue which could be caused by anything; an abscessed tooth, HSV/HZV infection, multiple sclerosis, or some other sort of viral or bacterial infection that has spread to the brain. All these could lead to what would actually cause the numbness: compression of a cranial nerve. Now, if your face is numb, and your eye, lip, or so on drooping (loss of facial muscle control) it is likely your Cranial Nerve 7. If it is just numb, and the facial muscle/movements are intact, then it is likely your Cranial Nerve 5.
*This info was Confirmed by a PCP (internal medicine), and a neurologist.
This question isn't very specific, as there are many things that can cause numbness in the body. Most likely its the stop of blood flow to that part of the body, generally by external pressure (such as sitting on that part of you're body for too long). Or it could be another more serious issue, but if its a constant numbess it could be nerve damage and you should go and get it checked out by a doctor.
If you recently went to the dentist, that could be the problem.
Usually that occurs when a nerve gets compressed.
That's the first sign you should stop smoking crack.

I am not an expert, but do you have neck pain at all? If so, C6 (Cervical Spine) is the where the nerve is for your thumb and forefinger. As far as your forearm, it depends on the severity of the nerve pinch. If you lay on your arm with your neck turned a different way, that might be your problem. Try a smaller pillow to get your neck in more of a natural line with the rest of your spine.
here u go
if your thumb is falling off and you are reading this. i would stop reading and go get medical attention. hope this helps

Call a doctor or go to the ER. These can be symptoms of a stroke.
