It is very likely those hens were ill or weak for some reason. Chickens take the "pecking order" very literally. The sick or injured birds are often "culled" by the flock before a human can intervene.

You must be cautious about blaming the rooster however. It very well could have been the other birds amongst the flock who struck the first blows. Once blood is drawn all the birds will get into the act. Roosters are usually the last to participate as it is their natural instinct to protect the hens not kill them. They will stand by and let the dominant hens bully another hen but seldom initiate the action.

Over crowding and or signs of illness can trigger a disruption in the coop. When one bird gets weak from being sick the rest can start being very aggressive and it can become a free for all. Once blood is drawn this fighting can really have a bad effect on the whole flock if not brought under control. Separate the worst injured birds if possible, at least until wounds heal. Feeding extra rations for a few days can distract the bullies and the minor competition for food. Providing more roosting space if possible will also help.

Cannibalism can be stopped in several ways.

  • Immediately remove any pecked on chickens. Blood will only intensify the attacks.
  • Increase the amount of space your birds have.
  • Freerange them.
  • Give them things to peck at, like flock blocks.
  • Give them things to do, places to explore. Add leaves/mulch for them to dig in, hang cabbage from the runs' top.
  • Increase the amount of protein in their diet. Cooked eggs, and game bird feed are great solutions.

How do you tell a rooster from a hen when they are young?

at about 8 weeks old or so they start developing small differences. For example, their cones on the top of their head might be bigger, they might have longer tail feathers, and they might have a broader chest. They might be more aggressive, or even start to rooster when they are young. if they rooster, they are a rooster- and it is loud and might be obnoxious.

If you have hens with a rooster does it take longer for it to start to crow?

No, actually it would take the same amount of time. A young male rooster will become ready when the time is right. It has nothing to do with interaction with other birds.
