Printing of the Canadian $1 note ceased in 1989 after the release of the loonie (a coin, in 1987) had been implemented. These notes are virtually never seen in circulation today although they are still legal tender.
Although the Canadian government has ceased production of the penny and is currently withdrawing them from circulation through the banks, they haven't decided when/if they will demonetize pennies. As of 2014, pennies are uncommon (but still possible to find) in circulation.
