Medicaid will cover braces completely if: the provider accepts Medicaid patients, and; the patient has either a handicapping malocclusion (i.e., one that impairs speaking, eating or breathing) or the required Salzmann score for that State.

Answer to Does Medicaid cover bracesIn certain situations medi-caid will cover braces. Each state has different guidelines for what is considered medically necessary. Some of them are very specific giving point values to deviations and requiring a certain point total to qualify. Medicaid will almost never cover braces for adults. And they also will not cover cases where there are still baby teeth present. If you Google medi-caid dental orthodontic coverage and then the name of your state you might be able to find out the specific guidelines for approval for your state. I have seen people who looked like they should be covered as medically necessary who were denied and I have seen others be covered that you might not expect to be covered but it was covered due to it causing a speech problem. In California they use a worksheet called the handicapping labo-lingual deviation (HLD) index scoresheet to determine coverage. google handicapping labo-lingual deviation (HLD) index, and you should find some good info. They may use the same worksheets in other states too, I am just familiar with California's worksheet. I know that it is different from the qualifications were when I lived in Minnesota. The Minnesota ones were not quite as strict.
