Generally, no, a dog won't eat when it is bloated. This is because the stomach is twisted around and there is no place for the food to go; the stomach is often painful as well.

Please be advised that bloat isn't the only reason a dog may not be eating, however.

Dogs can die from bloat. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery to correct - time counts and the faster your dog is on the surgical table the better his chances of surviving.

How long will a dog survive with bloat?

Bloat is life-threatening and very painful, and virtually all dogs will die within a few days. If a dog has bloat that you are not willing to correct surgically, consider having the dog humanely put to down prevent suffering. Consult with a vet ASAP in any case.

Why does your dog eat like he is starving to death all the time?

Some dogs naturally eat quickly and eat large volumes - this is either a learned behavior (sometimes dogs do this when they had uncertain feeding schedules as puppies) or is simply a habit of a dog that wants to spend more time playing or interacting with its humans. This can predispose a dog to gastric bloat and stomach twists, so it's not entirely benign.

Does raising dog food bowl help or cause dog bloat?

Well, It for certain helps. :) Not for certain at all. Research has shown that elevated food bowls can actually increase the risk of bloat. One answer is to try an anti-gulp water bowl and a slow feeder dog bowl, neither of these can cause any harm and have been proven to slow dogs down eating and drinking which is the only way to prevent bloat.

Does it hurt or injure a dog that gulps its food?

Yes it can. The most common danger is that it can cause Bloat. Bloat is much more common in large breeds and can be fatal. Additionally, bolting food can cause a dog to throw it up after eating it or choke on it if they inhale it. Giving food in smaller portions is a good way of stopping a dog from gulping down food.

How can you prevent bloat in a great dane dog?

Don't let them exercise for a good hour after eating a full meal. Make certain they are on good quality diets, not grocery store dog foods. If they have a lot of flatulence, that means they are not digesting their food properly, so give them on of several brands of pills which improve digestion. Having a lot of gas can increase the chances of bloat by 60%. If their kibble is in small pieces, most of them are, add water to soften it and make it more digestible. Have their food bowl elevated so it does not have to bed down to eat. Depending on size, elevate the bowl 24 to 28 inches above the floor. Learn the symptoms of bloat. If they get it, they need to go into surgery within an hour from onset or it can be fatal. Bloat is also called "torsion". An elevated food bowl was originally thought to be a good preventitive measure against bloat but research has progressed to show that an elevated food bowl can be more harmful to those dogs already at risk of contracting bloat. The link below expands on this point. Anti-gulp dog water bowls are a good idea, making your dog drink slower and therefore ingest less air. Slow feeder dog bowls too are useful in making it difficult for dogs to hoover up their food, encouraging them to chew before swallowing, both minimising the risk of bloat.
