I just adopted a Florida Snapping Turtle, someone had for ten years. It is about 8 inches long. It is still kind of nippy, I'm trying to socialize it. I hold it a lot and I just never put my fingers in front of it. If it gets upset about something I slowly put it down or I wrap it in a T-Shirt.
You can hold a snapping turle by lifting its hind legs off the ground (by the tail) and sliding your other hand under its plastron (botton side of its shell).

∙ 11y agoYes, snapping turtles have a very powerful bite and oftentimes will not release whatever they have bitten for quite a while. Approach them with caution, even the very young have a powerful bite.

Some turtles can bite humans - I think a big snapping turtle might be able to cut your finger off. However, turtles do not prey on humans for food.

I would not reccommend swimming with the snapping turtles. You can safely swim in a pond or river that has snapping turtles living in it. Snapping turtles bite if you get too close, though, and their jaws are very strong. A snapping turtle could bite your finger off. So swim away, but don't get too close to the turtles!

At that point it gets very aggressive. I have a 6 month old snapping turtle that is very calm and stays away from the other turtles. My friend's snapping turtle though, is another story. His snapper is always trying to bite the other turtles limbs but is to slow is the deep water.
