Yes it will. Just did the exact same swap - 89 Wrangler to a 98 Cherokee (MT).
Remember to use the flywheel from the '98.
You will have to swap parts like distributor, oil pressure - thingy, crankchaft pully etc. - it's an easy job it all bolts right on. Manifolds/fuel injection also bolts right on.
You will also have to rearrange the placement of the ignition coil from the engine block to the body/frame. (took 5 min on the Cherokee)

yes it should because the 4.2 wasnt done away with until 90 i believe when they went to 4.0. My 89 wrangler had a 4.2
89 Jeep Wrangler Flooding and popping through the Carborator once the engine is turned off?
yes
My jeep wrangler keeps loking in gears
no
your 89 jeep, i assume, is a yj model. I too had a 1990 yj jeep wrangler. any yj model seat will fit, that's from 89 - 95. I have a few spare seats from yj's and even cj's (they'll fit too) lying around, YJ is 87-95 (direct bolt in) It will also take a CJ7 frame-the seatt risers (seat frames) are identical
Yes, that is a good fit.
Al YJ's are compatible, 89-95
i have an 89 jeep wrangler ant the thermostat is located right on the front of the engine where the radiator hose goes to the engine their is two bolt es you take off and the little piece comes off ant the thermostat is right their
I do not think so, my 89 YJ had a normal alternator belt, but my 97 TJ has a serpentine belt, so aside from any mounting differences the drive system would be different.
right below the glove box
The 89's were all fuel injected. The 88's were either/or.
