He was usually armed with one of two Dexisime revolvers, or one of the three presentations swords that he owned. One by THE FRENCH MAKER, Devisime GIVEN to him by the Texas Brigade, or another by the French Maker J. Manceaux, a French Cavalry General Officer's Sword, That was Presented to Gen. Hood by Napoleon, the third. and finally an extremely RARE ENGLISH sword by Wilkinson Sword Co, presented to Gen Hood by the British Government. He also had another FRENCH sword, made by J. Manceaux that was his DRESS sword, and worn, by him, on FORMAL occassions. It was a General's officer Staff sword. Gen Hood has been a great general for the confederacy and has been critized of using BAD judgement. But a careful analysis of his military history, will change any ones opinion. He was a great american. a great soldier for the U. S. AND the Confederacy

The terms of surrender were that the men were free to go home, they could keep their horses to use for farming, and they were permitted to keep their sidearms. A sidearm (sword or pistol) is generally a defensive weapon- and it meant that Gen. Lee would not surrender his sword to Gen. Grant- a symbolic act of surrender. The men surrendering realized they were being given good treatment.
