Not all home insurance policies are the same, so it really just depends on what kind of coverage you slected when you purchased your policy. There is another issue here as well since you say the personal property is being "Used" at someone elses house.

Although most standard homewoners insurance policies do provide some limited coverage for off-premises personal property stored temporarily at another location, As you mention in your question that the property was being "used" elsewhere, (not temporarily stored) then it would likely not be covered.

When we loan, rent or lease our personal property out to others, such a situation basically removes the property from our personal care and control. When you loan your personal property out to others (excluding vehicles) the responsibility for care becomes that of the person you loaned it too and that property is no longer covered by your home insurance policy. The person using your property is who you would need to hold responsible for any loss or damages.

If you opted for the cheapest price insurance, you may "not" have obtained off-premises property coverage at all.

Contact your insurer or your agent for clarification of your coverages.

Does homeowners insurance cover if it is being rented?

No, When you rent your home out to someone your Homeowners Insurance Policy is automatically null and void whether or not you have notified your insurer. If you have become a landlord you need to purchase landlords insurance for your property. This is done by obtaining a Dwelling Policy with a rental dwelling endorsement. Just contact your insurance agent and he can help you place the right coverage for your tenant occupied property.

How can someone else get the stuff out of the car when its been repossessed?

After your vehicle has been repossessed, the repossessing company must contact you (often via the creditor) to notify you where your personal property can be recovered. Repossession agents are required to keep the property for thirty days to allow you to recover it, but they will charge you a storage fee, and pretty much every one will require that fee be paid before they surrender your personal property. Regarding an agent of yours being permitted to recover your personal property, it is possible, but may be difficult.
