You shouldn't kiss an active lesion, if you don't already have contracted the virus. HOWEVER chances are that you already have if your child has it, as it is extremely contagious.

If you ever shared s spoon with your kid (ice cream etc... ) you probably got it and didn't notice. Most MD's do not consider HSV-1 an STD unless the sores appear in the genital area.

I've had HSV-1 since I was a kid, and my MD says it's nothing life threatening as long as you avoid exposing an active sore to anything that might be contagious via body fluids (such as HIV).

That is, in the case you get sores at all, which most people don't get.

RS, not MD, but well advised.

Can a child get herpes from their parent?

If I kiss someone with a cold sore what's going to happen?

If you kiss someone with a cold sore/herpes virus sore, that person will contract the herpes virus. You are contagious with and without an outbreak. If you think you have cold sores or herpes, which they're basically the same thing, make an appointment with your doctor and have it checked. There's no cure, but there are ways to control the virus so that the outbreaks happen less and for a shorter time period. A herpes outbreak last from 5 to 14 days and once you contract the virus, it will remain in your body even if you don't have an outbreak. If you do have herpes, you are not alone. One in five Americans have the virus. However, educate yourself on the virus so that you don't spread it to others or to other parts of your body like your eyes and genitals. Be safe and smart.

How can an individual with herpes still maintain a healthy lifestyle?

Herpes is a virus that can appear either in the mouth area or in the genital area (HS-1 or HS-2). It causes the development of blisters that tend to scab over and heal with time (typically a few days.) It is not deadly. However, it is not curable either. People simply have to live with it. People who have Herpes can lead relatively normal lives. The issue of Herpes would only really come up under certain circumstances. For example, when people with Herpes have outbreaks, it can be both psychologically and physically uncomfortable. Herpes sores that appear in the mouth tend to be visible and thus makes the person uncomfortable. It is not recommended that people with visible mouth blisters kiss someone, as it is possible to transmit the virus this way. The issue of genital sores is equally uncomfortable as it may affect the sex lives of those infected and their partners. Again, the virus can be transmitted sexually. Most doctors would recommend that herpes patients refrain from unprotected sex during herpes outbreaks. Furthermore, studies have suggested that people can also transmit the virus to others even when obvious blisters are not present. Bottom line--there is no absolutely safe time for a herpes patient to have unprotected sex without risking infecting a partner.

How can you get herpes herpes?

There are various kinds of herpes you can get but the most common ones are hsv-1 oral herpes and hsv-2 genital herpes. This virus is transferred by skin to skin touching. Which means that if you have sex with someone who has genital herpes there is a high chance that the condom won't protect you from the virus. Since the condom does not cover the pubic area where more then likely where the virus will be at. The same goes for hsv 1, if you kiss someone who has it then you might just get it.
