Stomach crunches will help strengthen your stomach muscles but will not help you lose weight on your stomach per se. Spot training is used to strengthen specific muscles not melt away the fat there. If you do so many stomach crunches and eat very little then yes you will lose weight in other places as you will be exerting more energy than you take in - this is the key to weight lose. But note than if you do stomach crunches and do diet and exercise to lose overall body fat, your stomach muscles will look great once you have burned off the fat - so stomach crunches are still good, but you still have to get the stomach fat off to let your abs shine.
