In general, this is not a good idea. Gum has no nutritional benefit to dogs and in some cases can cause gastrointestinal obstructions.

Also, sugar free gums that are sweetened with xylitol (check the ingredient label) can cause severe or even fatal problems with blood sugar dropping and liver failure. This is a medical emergency that needs to be treated immediately.

If it is sugarfree gum, yes - this is toxic to dogs and can be fatal. Regular gum isn't necessarily good for dogs, but it probably won't kill them in small quantities.

It's not going to hurt them, however I would suggest you keep them away from it.

One stick of gum will not harm a dog. A whole pack might have some adverse effects. If your dog ingests a lot of gum, call your vet.

Well, i know this probably does not answer your question, but you should not give you dog human food anyway. Yes that does include gum. Another reason you should not is because gum cannot be digested if swallowed.

What can you do for a dog who eats a pack of gum?

Keep the gum away from the dog and keep it somewhere the dog can't get it and you won't have to worry about the dog eating the gum. If your pet has managed to find some gum and swallow it, take the animal to the vet immediately where they will try to remove the gum - often by making the dog vomit. If the has eaten a very small amount of gum, this may not be needed, but the dog should be under close supervision for the next 24 hours for any changes in behaviour or appetite. However, this does not always work and an ingredient found in gum and Tic-Tacs called xylotol can kill your pet within 30 minutes. So, just keeping your gum away from your dog is the best thing to do. As I always say, the best solution is prevention.
