Yes. There is no relationship between the training between becoming a CNA and an RN. There is nothing to prevent a CNA from becoming an RN. Being a CNA first may give you a picture of the field. Still it is not a requirement.

∙ 14y agoNo, the "RN" is saying I have 4 years college and a degree. If you are interested in a nursing type job you could become a nurse assistant without going to college for 4 years. Look in the Government pages of your phone book for State Board of Nursing to enquire. There are still some states that have a college of nursing or hospital-affiliated programs that are 2 yr diploma programs that will earn you a diploma that may qualify you to take your State Board Exams. However, these are feww and far between these days,Some states still have an option for LVN/LPN's to challenge State Board exams. This would entail a certain number of years working in a hospital/acute care facility, recommendations from your Director of Nursing, your immediate super visors{charge nurse or head nurse} and shift supervisor plus recommendations from some doctors that you have worked with in the hospital, preferably ones' that tell you that you do a good job,"I can always depend on you" etc. If you are willing to do this, then sudy your old text books, get RN textbooks, especially Chemistry and sample RN test prep books like N-Clex. If you do all this and pretty much ace the sample tests, you have a good chance of passing your Boards. STAY AWAY from online vocational ed programs.

- diploma program (typically three years, not recommended for individuals who do not have an already existing degree)
- associate degree (two years as a full-time student once the student starts the professional phase of the program)
- bachelor's degree (BSN) (four years as a full-time student)

if you want to become an RN and for some reason you are reluctant to join the RN classes then its a good idea to start your career as a CNA. CNA training classes take between 2 - 4 weeks and you can get a job almost immediately. The good thing about starting your career as a CNA would be that it will help you better understand your roles and responsibilities in the medical field. if you are a kind and caring person you should be able to do good and advance your career to become a RN. all in all you should consider CNA as a stepping stone into the medical career field and after that the possibilities are endless. It would be very helpful to take your CNA before your RN...I am currently in my CNA class and I also jobshadow at the hospital with my cousin that is an RN. So I get to see if from both ways and it does help a lot when I am following my cousin around and only being 17 and knowing all the medical terms is also quite helpful so she doesn't have to re-explain everything in a "watered down" language.

I have been a CNA for 3 years and am currently in nursing school due to graduate early next year. In my experience, it is very beneficial to become a CNA before becoming an RN. Not only does it help you to become familiar with a hospital environment and valuable skills such as multi-tasking within that hectic environment, it prepares you for some of the less glamorous aspects of nursing care such as bodily fluids, inappropriate patients, and even post-mortem care (the dead have to be washed too). The people who are CNAa before nurses, i have noticed, just don't seem to be afraid of rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty when they need to get the job done. I hope i have answered your question! and i believe that becoming a CNA before a RN you mentally prepare yourself for the outcome of some situations.
