Anselm Kiefer's 1999 painting Im Gewitter der Rosen is based on Ingeorg Bachmann's poem of the same name:
0 fernere Nacht!
Wherever we turn in the storm of roses,
The night is lit up by thorns, and the thunder
Of leaves, once so quiet within the bushes,
Rumbling at our heels.
Where always extinguished, what the roses ignite,
Rain washes us into the river. Oh faraway night!
But a leaf that struck us floats in the waves
And follows us to the mouth of the river
