Not sure what your asking but if your refering to the gear selector if its broke or something isn't functioning right it may keep your car from starting. You see all cars have a nutrual safety switch, the gear selector may be preventing the switch from doing it's job. Wich in turn make it seem like a bad starter. Hope this is what your looking for need more info to further diagnostics.
Obviously, it wouldn't shift.
There may be corrosion on the brushes in the starter and banging it would shift this temporarily Also it could be that the gear has jammed on the flywheel banging it can release this.
You may have a broken spring which disengages the transmission allowing it to shift or it is bad linkage going to the transmission.
The Viagra wore off. Sorry. Does it still shift? If it does, a bushing may have broken at the base of the shifter. If it doesn't shift, a broken cable, or possible the arm at the transmission. A better description of what the transmission is doing or not doing would help.
You typically can't bypass the starter - that is, after all, what actually turns the engine over to start the vehicle. If you have a manual shift vehicle, it is possible to roll start the vehicle. The key needs to be in the on position. You would roll the vehicle while it's in neutral, jump in, and shift it into gear.
Loose hold down clamp or broken shift cable.
Not really describing answer , but i would assume you shifter cables have broken
Parking brake not released, bad torque converter, bad transmission shift solenoid or bad transmission in general, broken shift cable not engaging the transmission.
Shift linkage broken or disconnected?
2430 2002 stuck in park what to do?
no shift or bad shifting,
If your stick shift will not move or if it will move but the car is not shifting gears, it is broken. If it feels very loose and is not catching on any gear then it is broken.
Acceleration could be impactedBut if it's an automatic, your car would have trouble shifting. Either take too long to shift or shift too early. The easiest thing to do is open the hood and check the dipstick.
Your truck may not shift gears because the transmission sensor is damaged or broken. It also may not shift gears because the transmission or linkage is damaged.
its broken !! take it to a mechanic
Linkage is broken or loose - or trans pump shaft is broken ( big job)
You can fix a broken linkage in a 1999 Navigator truck by adjusting its Gear Shift.
The cable/linkage between the shift lever and transmission is likely broken or disconnected
Check for a blown brake light fuse. Check for a broken or out of adjustment brake light switch.
Sounds to me like the neutral safety switch may be the culptrip. Not exactly sure where it is. Is this a floor shift or column shift? Will the engine try to start? in other words, does the starter engage? If not, then I would suspect the neutral safety switch. If the starter engages, but the engine won't start, then probably another issue.
If the speed sensor is broken several things can happen. The speedometer will not work and the transmission may not shift correctly.
It would bolt up, but it will not shift. The shift control systems are different. It would bolt up, but it will not shift. The shift control systems are different.
