To become a psychiatrist one must first become a medical doctor.
There is some kind of college in New Jersey, I think it's some Memorial College, I'm not sure, but it's really good. Arkansas State University and University of Arkansas at Little Rock have really good pre-medicine and psychology programs. The College of Letters & Science at University of California in Berkeley has a really good psychology program as well. To be a psychiatrist, it is recommended that you study chemistry and psychology, and I think you have to go into pre-medicine.

A psychiatrist is not usually a Ph.D., but a medical physician who specializes in psychiatry with a medical degree such as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) or a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. However, medical physicians can go into dual degree programs such as a D.O./Ph.D. program or M.D./Ph.D. program or earn a Ph.D. prior to attending medical school.

In order to become a Ph.D. psychologist, you need 4 years of college, usually with a psychology major, followed by a 5 year Ph.D. program in clinical psychology. It takes even longer to become a psychiatrist: 4 yrs. of college, 4 years of medical school, and 4 years of resideny training in psychiatry after medical school.
A practicing psychologist usually needs four years of undergrad (to earn their Bachelor's of Science). Then they will usually attend at least two more years of graduate school, to earn their Master's of Psychology, or more to earn a Ph.D. Total schooling is anywhere between 6 and 12 years.
All of them.
You can sign up for a clinical psychology Ph.D program at any of the colleges nationwide that offer the program. Beforehand though you will have to apply and be accepted to the college.
No, he worked as a writer and journalist for the majority of his life. He attended Oxford University and attempted to earn a Doctorate of Philosophy in literature, but did not complete the degree program. I don't believe that he ever received any extensive education in the field of psychology.
