Would a sticking valve cause 'knocking' on the initial start up of a 1993 Mercury Capri RX?

Pinging louder during first few seconds when started is normal for this engine. if the valve is sticking you should have a bad miss fire and the car would run ruff if the car runs smooth still it's a rod
