Would it be reliable to use the simple calibration curve method for the determination of potassium by flame photometry in seawater?
For a calibration curve method it is required that the composition (matrix) of standard and sample is nearly identical.when it is impossible to match the composition of the sample with the standard.we use standard addition method.
By constructing a calibration curve (e.g. Absorbance vs a series of known standards) you overcome the problem of non-linearity within the measurement range. If you only take a single calibration point ( plus a zero point) you assume that the calibration curve is precisely linear with zero point intercept, which is not always the case.
Reliable - . i remember this by using the 4 A's rule: search for accuracy, average and do the experiment again, discard Anomalies Validity - i remember this with the 3 C's rule: Cross-check ( compare with internet experiments or a classmate) calibration of equipment( starting the timer at 0.00), and the control variable( what you keep the same) hope this helped :)
