You have a 1998 dodge stratus-it starts to over heat and the coolant is muddy a little thinner than tooth paste but the oil is fine can anyone tell you what it is?

Your engine is mixing oil with the coolant. It could be a burned cylinder head gasket or a crack in the "cylinder head". It you continue to use the car, you will have coolant in the oil.

I have an 89 Olds Cutlass Calais SL...and you add coolant, very slowly, to the reservoir on the passenger side of the engine compartment. A little coolant, a little water, a little more coolant, a little more water...you get the idea. mixing the antifreeze 50 / 50 to start with will cut down on the confuse...tuner1978

Too little coolant, or a plugged coolant line.

yes it is thinner because diesel has more particles in it that petrol does which makes just that little bit thicker.:)

Yes. By little I'm talking two tablespoons. If more, then purge and refill with coolant and water.

Most new coolant is tinted red or green. If you have a different color than that look into it a little further. You may have oil in you coolant causing it to be a brown color.

when you open the hood you will see the coolant tank on your left hand side, (do not open it if the engine still Hot). on this vehicle the malfunction light will turn on even if the coolant level is a little bit low, once the engine is cold go ahead and open the reservoir tank and top it off with coolant (recommended) or regular water if is just a little bit low

Tough to narrow it down with such little detail, but it sound like your car's thermostat may be malfunctioning and not controlling the temperature correctly.

You will have to drain part of the coolant. Try to drain as little as possible and fill up before restarting the engine. No, the thermostat is usually at the top of the engine block (placed between the top input hose and the block). If, however, the radiator is full of coolant, there will be some spillage. Also, make sure the coolant has cooled down before replacement, and do periodically replace the coolant as needed.
