If you have the owners manual it should show you on page 6-75, it has a diagram of the belt and the belt is on the left hand side of the engine. If you dont have an owners manual the alternator is is on the left hand lower side of the engine compartment, it is right up next to the engine, at least that is where it is on a 1997 olds aurora, so i think it will be in the same spot.

just count the spark plugs and or spark plug wires. One goes to each plug. You could read the information label somewhere under the hood also. I just bought a 1992 Oldsmobile Achieva and according to the owners manual the engine identification goes by the 8th character of the VIN. The manual has an engine specifications page and lists the different engines with the VIN engine code listed below it.
