Why did the US get invoved in the conflict in Vietnam?

After World War 2, the French went back to Vietnam (formerly their territory) in an attempt to reclaim it, but the Soviets had already taken North Vietnam. The Soviets helped establish Northern Vietnam, and left it to run itself. The French claimed South Vietnam, leading to a struggle between the two countries. The French battled North Vietnam on multiple occasions, but ultimately gave up. The U.S entered Vietnam in order to prevent North Vietnam from invading South Vietnam, but North Vietnam had the majority of support. While the North Vietnamese Army invaded from the North, Vietnamese insurgents (Viet Cong) used guerilla tactics in South Vietnam to disrupt U.S/NATO operations.

Probably economic problem, disunity within Vietnam (Yes- some wanted Vietnam to be communist, they were called Vietcong and while the rest wanted a republic type of government which resulted into North & South Vietnam that was later in the end of 1970s, the failure of South Vietnam which is a democratic nation, North Vietnam had attempt and succeed in reunify Vietnam into communist.) and under French's harsh leadership.

Who rules Vietnam?

Hard to say after 1945, the French suppose to rule Vietnam. But the French is too weak after World War 2 so the British India had to support the French thus Great Britain ruled Vietnam for a year. The Viet Minh lead by Ho Chi Minh also fight for the control of the country. The Japanese surrendered in 1945 but their official still held the French as P.O.W. and taught the Viet Minh how to fight until they are ordered to go back. So I would say the Allies ruled Vietnam while constantly under attack by the Vietnamese Communist Party.

Who was fighting in the Vietnam war conflict?

Well considering it was in Vietnam and thousands of U.S. troops died, i would have to say the United States and Vietnam fought in the Vietnam War. Although, there was still a little involvement from the french but that was very limited. In addition to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia had limited involvement while supporting the North Vietnamese.

What years did John McCain serve in the war?

McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958 and became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he nearly lost his life in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. Later that year while on a bombing mission over North Vietnam, he was shot down, badly injured, and captured as a prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese. He was held from 1967 to 1973, experiencing episodes of torture and refusing an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer; his war wounds would leave him with lifelong physical limitations. He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and, moving to Arizona, entered politics.I found this on Opidig.com
