"925" markings on sterling silver defines it as 92.5% pure silver with 7.25% being a strengthening alloy, usually copper.

A "975" marking can only mean 97.5 % pure silver and indicates a high quality sterling item. It is not often seen, and my guess is that this must be a very old piece or a newer item that uses extra sterling silver in its production.

Either way,if you own a "975",you have a very nice piece of sterling !!

No .925 is the US mark for sterling. 965 indicates Europe and Asia's mark that translates to what would be the equivalent of 23k gold. As we use the .925 to indicate sterling (if its not sterling it won't have any fineness mark) which is 925 parts out if 1000. In other countries they use the same system to mark gold fineness without the point in front. A 965 mark on a piece of jewelry is a gold fineness mark not silver....overseas silver is usually marked 800. Unless it's super old then it's marked with symbols. So what you actually have is close to the purest fineness of gold! And as you know gold isn't always gold in color. You can Google and get a chart of all the gold fineness marks for jewelry pretty easily. The only thing you will usually see on silver is .925 or the word sterling or 800 if it's from overseas which I think is as close as you can get to sterling with jewelry from other countries but don't quote me on that. I hate thinking that this whole time you've been thinking it's a simple silver piece when in reality it's a much more valuable gold piece. If it has any stones they are likely real as well. They don't put fake sruff in high fineness gold! Here is an example of a set of earings I have marked 1967 965 white gold. Notice the additional detail with engraving...they are diamond and onyx. Hope this helps.

kitchen utensil, wood, nickel, tableware
