I did not say they can't breed because they are egg layers. I said that a female can not get pregnant because they are egg layers. There is a big difference. In order to be pregnant, a female has to have young developing inside her body. This can not happen in an egg layer because the eggs are fertilised by the male after they have left the body of the female fish.

What fish can't be bred? The original question was about breeding the Black Ghost Knife fish (Apteronotus albifrons). The questioner wanted to know if one (of 2) they had was possibly 'pregnant' or not. My answer was to the effect that they can't get 'pregnant' because they are egg layers and their eggs are fertilised outside the body of the fish. I also added that there appear to be no confirmed and documented accounts of aquarists breeding them successfully. This indicates to me that they are extremely difficult to breed and raise and therefore the questioner successfully breeding them by chance seems very unlikely.
