The problem is usually the worm gear in the gearbox. It is usually made from nylon (Plastic) and is easily replaced without removing the gearbox from the car. My experience is with a fiesta so should be the same and worth checking.
Pull out the retaining pin just below the connection point of the speedo cable and the worm gear should just pull out. installation is the reverse of this.

A new worm gear is available from the dealers for under a tenner.

How do you remove the speedometer cable on a 1995 Ford E-150 Van?

If it is a stock model speedometer, there is no speedometer cable. there is a sensor on the transmission which transmits signals in a wire to the speedometer assembly, which is on your dashboard. If you have a problem check the speed sensor, or the wiring to it. JOEDI

Where is the speedometer cable located on a 1987 Mazda 323?

What would cause a 1991 Mazda Protege to have a blinking hold light and a non-functional speedometer?

The speedometer cable (which runs from the transmission to the dashboard) has snapped. This is a two-piece cable, and the one-piece cable in later Proteges will not work. I had the transmission replaced, and the cable could never be fit in properly. This is a mechanical speedometer, so you would have to change the entire speedometer part of the instrument panel to use a magnetic/electronic speedometer.

Where is the speedometer cable on the 1997 Saturn SC 2?

Saturns do not use a speedometer cable to control the gauges on the cluster. It uses the magnetic pickup located in the vehicle speed sensor, mounted in the back side of the transmission. The computer then sends signals to the dashboard to operate the gauges electronically
