Remove the top radiator hose. The thermostat is located under the hose inlet on the engine. Remove the inlet to replace the thermostat.
My 4.0 awd aerostar does not have an egr. If you have pinging,and done all the usual tune up stuff, try putting in spark plugs from the 3.0 engine. the different reach range cured my pinging!

No, it uses a timing chain. The long belt that you see under the hood is a serpentine belt. Replace if excessively cracked or worn. The other smaller belt off to the right, when looking at the engine, is the power steering belt. Hope this clears things up for you.
