The brake light switch might not be connected properly. Remove the brake light switch for 10 seconds and replace it to its original position.
brake pedal light switch.
It sounds as if the contact switch that controls the brake lights may be faulty or out of adjustment. Under the dash, look to where the brake pedal lever is suspended and you should see an electrical switch with a "plunger" that is ALMOST in contact with the pedal lever. This is the switch that senses when the brake pedal has been applied and activates the brake lights. It is, necessarily, a 'tight' adjustment. If it has slipped out of adjustment it may be sensing that the brakes are always 'on.' If not, then the switch may be worn out and needs to be replaced. The actual problem is your 3rd brake light. I had the same problem, my brake lights stayed on when it was out of Park. We replaced the brake light switch as recommended. Being very frustrated with the problem, I started to troubleshoot. We took off the 3rd brake unit and not only were the lights burned out, but the unit had started to melt. I went to a Ford Dealership and picked up the complete unit for just around $40.00. Now the problem has been solved. I hope this helps others.
The brake light switch is located under the dash. It is connected to the upper arm on the Brake pedal
Are you sure you need the fuse for the cruise control. My cruise control wasn't working, neither were my brake lights. All 7 bulbs were burnt out. When the brake lights were replaced the cruise control worked.
When you have your head lights turned on (the switch turned to the right all the way), pull that same switch out towards you
Running lights (left side): Fuse #47 -- Running lights (right side): Fuse #48 -- Brake lights: Fuse #54. Fuse panel is on the lower left side (underneath) the dashboard. NOTE: If it is your brake lights that are not working and fuse # 54 looks okay, check the brake light switch, it may have gone bad.
Check your brake pads.
The screws that hold the rear lights in place on a focus are inside behind the rear pillar trim
Most ford brake switches can be replaced with no tools. They are set up a few different ways, but usually you twist them a 1/4 turn and remove. It is located above the brake pedal under the dash.
Fuse number 54
its a 2001 ford focus 1.6 petrol
If NONE of the brake lights are working (including the "high mount" center light, I'd check the stop light switch next. It is located up under the dashboard near the top of the brake pedal lever. CHeck to see that it is still in proper adjustment (barely touching the lever, and if it is, it may need replacement.
