An ear infection, most likley.
Any swelling can be a sign of infection. Check to see if it feels hot, and observe whether it seems to be bothering the cat. If so, you need to see a veterinarian or an animal clinic.
If the swelling remains after a few days, you should in any case get qualified medical assistance for your cat.
The ear is probably infected. This could be caused by a fight the cat got in, and the resulting bacteria left in a wound, by a burst blood vessel in the cat's ear that is causing it to slowly fill with blood, by a blood vessel that was cinched off somehow, resulting in lack of any blood circulation to the ear, or a variety of other causes. The cat should be taken to a vet to have it's ear professionally drained, and be put on a course of antibiotics to prevent further infection. It is also recommended that the cat wear a bandage and a cone collar until the ear can heal properly, to avoid further irritation, though most animals are very good at getting those things off.
This may be a blood hemotoma. A visit to the vet will answer this question.

The simplest way, of course, is to scan them with a chip reader. If the chip reader cannot pick up a signal, chances are they have not been microchipped. A less certain indicator is to check inside the cat's ears. Cats quite often will be tattooed inside their ears, so that the vet has a hope of finding the owner of a cat that turns up for treatment. If the cat is chipped, there is no need for an ear tattoo, and often none will be done. However, not all cats are tattooed even if they are not microchipped, and some cats have both an ear tattoo and a microchip.
Cats can get ear mites from other cats who have them, or plants that have ear mites on it. But most cats who get ear mites are usually outdoor cats. Other cats can give your cat ear mites because the those little annoying buggers are very contagious. Or if you have a cat and they play around plants, they could catch it if that plant had ear mites on it.
There are many things that could cause an ear lobe to swell and feel like it has a fever. Just being irritated can do this.

Ear infections tend to be caused by water getting trapped in the ear after bathing or swimming. Also, scratching the delicate skin inside the ear with a finger nail or other object may cause an infection as well.
