Far from earth, orbiting in the atmosphere, are communications satellites. Signals from earth are sent to these satellites. A broadcasting service that allows a subscriber to obtain television signals through a dish shaped object is known as Satellite Television. The signals received from communications satellites are scrambled electronically to prevent them from being used unless a subscription fee is being paid. With their subscription, a consumer receives both a descrambler and a receiving dish. These systems are almost completely free of wires. Original television stations broadcast signal in radio wave bands. Antennas placed on televisions or on the roof of a home received the transmissions of these waves, but the quality of the picture on the set depended on the strength of the signal. Atmosphere conditions and the amount of distance from the stations would sometimes create poor results.

Some History

Older satellite television systems consisted of extremely large dishes that pulled distant signals in to a powered antenna. Each television channel was located on a separate communications satellite. The dish would have to be turned or cranked physically to certain points in the sky to receive the correct signals. Regulation of these dishes was not monitored closely, and illegal descramblers could electronically pull in signals, thus creating a very profitable underground market. These illegal descramblers promoted the subscription satellite services that are available today.

Satellite Providers

There are many different satellite television providers today. Their services are especially present in many rural areas where there is no Cable Television service. These different customers are widely advertised and most have 24-hour customer service departments. After placing an order for service, the provider one has chosen will send a trained technician to install and set up the system in the home. Multiple receivers are often a choice of many consumers, as more than one television is generally in the home.

Reception

For the best reception of signal, a clear line of sight is imperative. Something as simple as a stand of trees or a hill can block the signal. Some consumers often complain of loss of signal during a heavy down pour of rain or snowfall. The overall clarity of the digital signal pleases most all satellite television customers. They also find the wide variety of channels and the option to purchase many pay per view events a plus. Each satellite provider offers different channel packages. The more channels your package contains the higher your monthly subscription bill will be.
