You hate your job and your boss is a jerk. What can you do? You leave your job, but you do it in the most professional way possible. Those fantasies of burning the building down around your boss’ ears will just have to stay fantasies.

1. Have another job lined up before you leave the first one. No matter how bad your current job may seem, it is a job. You will have money coming in until it is time to leave for your new job. That way you are not desperate when you leave.

2. Give both written and verbal notice. If you have an employment agreement, use that guideline as to timeframe. If not, it is customary to give two to four weeks notice. You don’t need to give a long explanation of why you’re leaving, other than it is time to move on to explore other opportunities. Let your immediate supervisor know first, then your department head. email co-workers with contact information for future networking.

3. Offer to help find and train your replacement. Just because you hated the job, it doesn’t mean that the next person will. You know better than anyone else what skill set is needed. You also will have tips for your replacement that will ease their transition into the job.

4. Be respectful of your boss and your co-workers. No bragging about the new job. There might come a time in the future when you are working with these people again.

5. Finish any projects that you can in the time allotted. Tie up any loose ends. Work normally until it is time for you to leave. Let everyone know by your actions, that you are a professional and a class act.

6. Leave your desk and work area neat and clean. Return any office supplies and office equipment to their proper places. Box up your personal items, leaving nothing behind. Empty the trash.

You can be proud of the way you handled the ending of this job and look forward to your future in your new job with a clear conscience.
