Upgrade to Energy Efficient Cooling

Today's new high-efficiency air conditioning systems provide a higher level of energy efficient cooling than those of just five years ago. This is because the minimum seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) was raised from 10 to 13 in 2006. If your system is older than that, your SEER rating could be as low as 6.

Of course, if you're unfamiliar with SEER, it's hard to understand what these numbers really mean. SEER actually shows the relationship between an air conditioner's expected cooling capacity and the amount of energy it will consume over the course of the cooling season. Thus, air conditioners that carry a higher SEER will provide a higher level of energy efficient cooling.

With that in mind, upgrading a system that is over 10 years old could save you as much as 40 percent in annual cooling costs. While some may be deterred by the initial costs of installing a high-efficiency air conditioner, the long-term energy savings you will receive can make the upgrade worthwhile. Depending on the system you choose, you may even find that you are eligible for energy-based rebates from the manufacturer and credits at the local, state and federal levels.

If you're currently consider a new energy efficient cooling system for your home, be sure to take SEER into account. It also pays to compare the efficiency enhancing features that some systems include. For example, energy efficient cooling systems with a fan-only switch allow you to improve ventilation during cooler periods, such as during the night, without raising your energy costs unnecessarily.

It's also important to consider the competence of your contractor when installing an air conditioner. Are their technicians qualified? Will they do the job right? Do they understand the importance of proper sizing? For example, if your air conditioning is over-sized, it will have a tendency to shut off before your air has been properly dehumidified. This can lead to excess moisture and mold growth in the home. It also wastes energy, basically defeating the purpose of your high-efficiency upgrade.

If your technician is attempting to size your energy efficient cooling system based on the nameplate of an existing air conditioner, you are not getting the service you deserve. To ensure that your system is properly sized, your technician should use a nationally recognized sizing method. Only then can you be confident that your system will provide the energy savings you deserve.
