If you're traveling from the US, start by using a website like Kayak.com to find out which airlines fly to the destination you want to travel. Kayak checks Orbitz, cheaptickets.com and the airlines. Then check the individual airlines' websites to see if their pricing is any lower because of a last minute sale. If you're flying to a destination reached by the "low cost airlines" like Southwest or JetBlue, you'll also have to go to their websites, as their tickets aren't sold by any other online company.
From the Kayak.com search engine, you can also search pricing through travelocity, vayama, expedia, hotwire and priceline.
If you're planning to travel from the US to an international destination, an airline consolidator may have the best pricing. The USACA consolidators do not sell direct to the public and do not have their tickets listed on any of the major online search engines (like airfare.com, airgorilla.com, cheaptickets.com, travelocity, etc.).
