Put your foot on the brake.
If it will shift when the engine is off, but not while it is running your clutch is not working
Hold your brake down while doing so.
The powertrain control module has detected a malfunction Take it in and have it scanned for trouble codes in order to have the problem repaired (Helpfull)
The light that shows an engine symbol is your check engine light . If the light stays on while the engine is running, the OBD II system has detected a possible problem with your emission system. If the light flashes on and off, an engine "miss" has been detected . Have your Explorer scanned for any trouble codes to find and then repair the problem.
First off can you feel it shift through all the gears while off (not running). Second off while running can you shift through the gears or does it grind while trying to shift through them. If it grinds when you try to shift then your clutch is shot. Good luck
While running, the clutch must engaged before you can shift into a gear. While off and sitting, the clutch does not need to be engaged to shift. The car is stuck in 5th gear?
If the engine is running and the alternator is good. If the engine is not running, no.

Get engine running. While the engine is running disconect the POSITIVE termninal from the battery. If the engine dies, the Alterntor is bad.
The alternator - it provides a charge to the battery while the engine is running.
My probe will not shift to any gear while running but will when turned off. Before taking it to a mechanic I would like a general idea if this is a clutch or transmission problem.
