Usually the reason for a fuel pump failure is contaminated fuel. If any foreign bodies or a build up of particles get into the pump, they can either wear away the surfaces (which means it won't seal and doesn't pump) or get caught between moving parts and cause a break. If you think of the pump as a small engine then it should be easier to understand why this happens.
