To hook up a stock tachometer on a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX, locate the wiring harness behind the dashboard. Connect the tachometer's signal wire to the ignition coil's positive terminal or the ECU's tach signal wire, typically found in the engine bay or near the fuse box. To hook up a tachometer on a 1996 Subaru Impreza, first identify the correct wire for the tach signal, which is typically the yellow wire from the ignition coil. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety, then connect the tachometer's signal wire to the yellow wire. Connect the ground wire of the tachometer to a suitable ground point, and the power wire to an accessory power source. Finally, reconnect the battery and test the tachometer for proper operation.
Hook it to the negative side of the coil.
