i have found that with my 97 sable the low coolant light comes on when my oil is low. same as your car can run hot when your extremely low or out of oil
The coolant level sensor is bad. It is integrated into the coolant bottle, so you need to replace the coolant bottle.
One. Per: the coolant level sensor on any car is always in the coolant reservoir bottle. remove the bottle and you will see it plugged in from the outside near the bottom (usually). (From Yahoo answers)
To fix the heat in the 2000 Sable, check the coolant level first. Make sure that the engine is not heating, if it is then the thermostat or water pump could be bad. These are the most common causes of heat being out.
On a 2001 Mercury Sable : The automatic transaxle ( transmission ) fluid level dipstick is near the firewall , in the area of the brake fluid reservoir , in the engine compartment
On a 2000 Mercury Sable : The automatic transaxle ( transmission ) fluid level dipstick would be near the firewall just to the drivers side of the engine ( where the transaxle is bolted to the engine )
On a 1996 Mercury Sable : The automatic transaxle ( transmission ) fluid level dipstick is near the firewall and the brake fluid reservoir ( looking from the FRONT of the vehicle it is to the left of the reservoir )
I am having the same problems with a used 96 sable bought recently. No speddometer odometer trip odometer and no radio function. (also low coolant level idiot light is always on, though the expansion tank has coolant in it)I understand that this car has no speedo cable, it is electrical. a shop told me that the dash cluster is bad. I am going to replace the dash cluster myself with a used one. I will update you on the progress, and check here periodically for other useful tips in troubleshooting/ repair advice.
When the low coolant warning light comes on and the car has enough coolant, it usually means there is a problem with the coolant level sensor system. The sensor may need to be replaced.
The amount of Freon you will need to fill your 2001 Mercury Sable air conditioning system is dependent upon how low the Freon level is. A recharge kit will have a gauge to tell you when the system is full.

have you checked the oil level in the transmission ? I'm betting the answer is no
NOTE: this answer is describing the location of the engine coolant temperature sensor - NOT the coolant sensor in the reservoir that warns when the level gets too low.The coolant temperature sensor is located directly adjacent to the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is what the upper radiator hose (toward the right side of the engine compartment) connects to. You do not have to replace the reservoir to replace this part, but leaky coolant reservoirs are a common problem on this model.
