∙ 15y agoEarly Roman helmets were made of brass, a malleable alloy of copper and zinc. Later helmets were made of bronze, a very strong, hard alloy of copper and tin. Still later some helmets were made of iron, which is not as strong as bronze but was easier to find. The Romans worked some of their iron with carbon, but they are not thought to have developed true steel.

∙ 11y agoRoman shields were made out of cross glued strips of wood which were covered in leather and reinforced around the edges with either heavy leather or metal. The heavier leather was preferred as it did not rust nor require special cleaning. Metal was used for the inner handle and the outer boss. The entire shield was (when not in use) carried in a protective leather sheath-like case.

The crest of the Roman helmet was made of real plumes or horse hair and represented a ranking Roman Officer in the group. The Guals influenced the design of the Roman helmet called Imperial Gallic and also introduced chainmail to the Romans.
