When Ronald Reagan left office, he was the oldest person to ever be the President of the United States, at 78 years old. He was also the oldest person elected president, at 69 years old. If John McCain wins the nomination and then the general election in November, he will beat that record at 72 years old.

That was Strom Thurmond of South Carolina, who won re-election to an eighth six-year term in November 1996, one month before turning 94 (and he completed that term, retiring in January 2003 at the age of 100).
