The term fall of Rome refers to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire as a result of the invasions by the Germanic peoples who took over most of its lands. The city of Rome was never captured and the Roman emperors had ceased to live there some 200 years earlier. The Germanic peoples never attacked an emperor. The eastern part of the Roman Empire was not affected by these invasions and continued to exist for nearly another 1,000 years.

All Roman Emperors were famous in their own way. There were 192 people who claimed the title Emperor of Rome from 27 BC when the Emperor Augustus took control of the Senate until 1185 AD.
