Former religious philosophies had been given up by the rich. The poor, who couldn't meet the demands of the gods, liked the Oriental religion because it gave hope for endless life. Most Romans still worshipped many gods, including Mars, the god of war; Jupiter, the god of the sky; Ceres, the goddess of grain; and Janus, the god who guarded the city gate. Festivals were held in honor of the gods.
