You could say that the Romans traded all over their empire. They purchased their grain from places such as Sicily and Egypt and much of their oil from Spain. These products were in addition to the grains and olives grown in Italy. Alexandria was a great trading center which not only supplied the world with wheat and papyrus, but also more exotic goods. Alexandria was at the crossroads of east and west, and many spices, perfumes and cottons came through the port of Alexandria. Roman merchants would undoubtedly be there even before Egypt became a province.
