That would be the kodiak bear. residents of kodiak island and some surrounding areas, kodiak bears have evolved to be the largest and most powerful land predators on earth. they can tip the scales at more than 1300lbs and are immensely strong. while polar bears can be equally heavy kodiak bears are more muscular and more aggressive even though they are not a pure carnivore like polar bears. kodiak bears are a sub species of coastal brown bears which can also grow very large. males usually weigh double or more than females and will kill cubs to bring females into estrous. despite the size difference males are reluctant to fight females to get to their cubs because of their sheer agression. females will readily die protecting their offspring. attacks on humans are rare because of the remote areas these bears inhabit, but when they do occur they are devastating. because of their brutal strength, speed, size and huge claws and teeth even a brief defensive attack can be lethal. if attacked by a large brown bear it is arguably better to run and climb a tree than to play dead since their sheer size and weight makes them slightly slower and less adept at climbing than smaller bears.

The largest living animal native to the United States is the American bison. A close second would be the grizzly, or brown bear.

Mammoths (cousins of elephants) used to be the largest, until they died out around 4,500 years ago.
