Just did this the other day on my 1993 corolla (same engine, etc).

It helps to first get the replacement starter motor so that you have something to look at and see how it looks like, and where the mounting bolts fit.

The starter motor itself is mounted on the back side of the engine with just two bolts, and it is in principle an easy replacement. The downside is that the bolts are not so easy to access, so patience and some good tools are important.

You'll have to raise the front end of the car enough to work under it. Open the hood and

disconnect the battery terminals from the battery. Go underneath the car and disconnect the cables from the old starter motor. One cable goes to a plug-in terminal (press down the retainer clip with a small screwdriver to remove, the other is fastened with a 12mm hex nut.

Now you can remove the two bolts holding the starter motor in place (14mm hex). The bottom-most bolt is accessible from below the engine and faces the passenger side of the car. If the bolt seems hard to get to, cheer up...this is the easy one :-)

The second bolt faces the DRIVER side of the car, and is accessible from under the hood. It's easy to find, but it is surrounded by a lot of cables and stuff that get in the way.

I removed the air filter and used a socket wrench with a hinged handle to get the bolt started, finishing with a regular wrench. As the second bolt loosens, you should have someone else hold the starter motor in place, and catch it as it comes off.

Getting the old starter motor out of the engine compartment is a bit of an obstacle course...I did it by moving away part of the plastic underbody cover on the passenger side. Replacement part goes back in the same way, Again, have someone hold the new starter motor in place while you reinstall the first bolt. Connect the cables to the starter motor terminal, replace anything (like the air filter) that you removed for the installation, reconnect the battery, and turn the key.

I am no mechanic, and it took me about 3 hours once I had everything I needed. Someone more competent could certainly do it faster. Good luck!

Where is the starter solenoid for a 1998 Toyota Corolla?

I believe that the solenoid is located ont the starter itself. If you can just follow the positive battery cable down to its next junction towards the starter motor; that is usually where the starter solenoid is located.
