The problem is probably in the dimmer switch but it needs to be checked out.

There could be several reasons why a 1996 Sunfire will turn over but not start. The most common reason is a spark plug needs to be replaced. Check with a licensed mechanic for further help.
You need to go to a car parts store, and get a repair manual for your car. They cost about $16.00 Or, go to a Public Library.
the head lamp has a removable bulb that twists out like a regular house bulb
Depending on the year and if your brake light bulbs double as turn signals, there may be a problem in the turn signal switch if there is no short in the rest of the wiring.
Normally caused by faulty dimmer switch.
The low beam bulbs are burnt out. See the Sources and Related Links below for bulb info. Also, check your fuses...probably even before inspecting the bulbs.
Do your headlights work? High beams more specifically? If that answer is yes, then the bulbs are fine. DRLs are nothing more than a lower voltage being sent to the high beams in the Sunfires. (They use 9007 HB5 bulbs, which is a dual filament. highs and lows in one bulb). IF the LOW beams work, but not the high, try new bulb. Otherwise its off to try and find that relay... which is a pain in the ass. Personally, I pulled my relay out and never put it back in (I have HIDs in the car now).
try checking ur high-bea fuses and relays
I don't see why not it is the exact same car I think up to 1999.
Only if u used the transsmission, engine computer and motor mounts from the 01
check the wiring at the hi-low switch.
When bulbs on a Toyota Corolla are working but one is not, it is usually a burnt out bulb. You can change this yourself.

The distributor cap is located on the top of the distributor on a 1996 Sunfire. It is connected to the spark plugs via a wire.
I paid $3,500 for mine. Kelly Blue Book for a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire SE Coupe is $3,250.00 retail.
