With the influx of trade coming through Florence, the wealthy families, such as the Medicis, had more money to spend on luxuries. One such luxury was having their portraits painted. In addition, the Renaissance ideals, such as Humanism led to the wealthy becoming patrons of art. But they mostly became patrons of the arts to showcase their wealth.

The family was the Medici of Florence and were the bankers, popes, and married into other royal families of Europe. They supported the artists to decorate their palaces, and churches of Florence. For an artist like Michelangelo or Da Vinci the only way they could live was to have rich sponsors to provide them with commissions.
