following ancient civilisations there came a period of history coined the dark age. it was called this because many of the scientific and technological breakthroughs that had been made in the past were abandoned and we as a race became far less civillised. We became barbaric and focused on warrior skills. During the renaiisance people ( particurally in europe) began to exspress a wider range of thinking and began to develop new ideas. People began to focus on arts and many great artists and scientists flourished - people like Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Leonardo and many others. It also brought about much social change as people became far more humanitarian and began to emphasise with each other in greater levels. During this era there were a large number of revolutions and civil wars which brought a end to many despotisms and monarchies and in there place established democracies and republics
I would say that literature came before history. Librarians put literature in the 800s and history in the 900s.
