The average centre-to-centre distance from the Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km. But the moon rotates around the Earth and the distance always varies.

Since I am not from America, I don't know exactly the dimensions of a penny. (If you actually referring to the American penny)

It also matters the geometric placement of the coins: do you put them on top of each other on the narrow side (like books on top of each other), or you place the circles to be tangent ?

But considering that the penny is 1mm on his side, and you build a "tower" of those until you reach the moon, then you will need 384,403,000,000 pennies.

Good luck with the work ! (and raising the money)

20 pennies stacked in one inch. Average of 238,857 miles to moon. 63,360 inches in a mile. This equals 302,679,590,400 American pennies stacked up to reach moon.
