yes there will but one side of the earth will have night forever and the other side will have day for ever.

No because it impossible. it would only be seasons .

I'm improving on your answer. . .actually we are a part of a galaxy called the milky way. The earth sits on a spiral arm as well as the sun in the galaxy. If you look
at a hurricane. . .it is the shape of a galaxy with the 'eye' in the center. The plane of the Milky Way is inclined by about 60° to the ecliptic. The center of course is described as a massive black hole. The fact that the Milky Way divides the night sky into two roughly equal hemispheres indicates that the Solar System lies close to the galactic plane. Hense, you have the galaxy itself giving you night and day and not the rotation of the earth itself. This information came from wikipedia org.

So the question still is. . .does the earth rotate? I think we have seen it stop on a dime and it wobbles. . .but this wobble in and of itself hasn't proved that is rotates
too. Although it's been described as a spinning top. Also if the sun is on a different galatic arm . . .it may mean that the earth doesn't circle exactly around the sun.

No, but we still would have seasons and years. ______________ Oh, this is a wonderous question. We are so connected to earth-bound thinking. Yes, there would be a day and night, and the day/night cycle would be equal to a year. Not only that, but the sun would rise in the west, and set in the east. This results from the fact that the earth is orbiting the sun, and while the orbit is not itself a 'rotation', all parts of the earth would experience a period of daylight and night time over the course of a year if the earth were not rotating relative to the fixed stars. And this relationship to the fixed stars is how rotation of earth is determined and measured.

If it did not rotate relative to the background stars, there would be a day and night, but the day/night cycle would be 1 year in length. If one face of the earth was always facing the sun, one side of the planet would always be day, while the other would always be night - the earth would have to spin on its axis once in a year for this to happen.

It depends on what side of the earth you are on as you would constantly be facing the same direction. You might face the sun or you might have a permanent sunset or worse you could always live in the dark. Earth time under these circumstances would not have evolved day/night time measurement as we know it. Days refer to the time it takes for the Earth to make one revolution. Days on an Earth that doesn't revolve on its axis would have some other meaning.

If there were no synodic rotation (rotation relative to the sun) then there would be perpetual day on the day side of the earth and perpetual night on the dark side. If there were no sidereal rotation, then there would be a day (daytime plus night time) that would be equal to a year. Also, with no sidereal rotation, the long day would begin with the sun rising in the west, and it would end with the sun setting in the east. IT MAKE SENSE

First, the earth does not rotate around the sun, it orbits. The earth rotates around its own north-south axis. For these reasons, if the earth did not orbit the sun, it would still rotate on its own axis, and there would still be night and day.

I think day and night would be the same length as the Sun would always be over the Equator. Also there would be no seasons as the tilt of the Earth is responsible for the seasons.

A single "day" would last a year. There'd be 6 months light and 6 months dark at all latitudes.

One side of the earth would always be turned toward the sun and have daylight, and likely be to hot for people to live there; the other side would be dark and very cold.
