In the acknowledgments Paolini said, For those of you that understood the reference to a "lonely god" when Eragon and Arya are sitting around the campfire, my only excuse is the Doctor can travel everywhere, even alternate realities. Hey, I'm a fan too! He was referring to a section of the book that Arya wrote something on the ground. It said, Adrift upon the sea of time, the lonely god wanders from shore to distant shore, upholding the laws of the stars above. It was a reference to Dr. Who. It didn't really play into the plot of the book, but was Paolini's way of giving props to the Doctor as a fan himself.
In the resolution of "Eragon," Eragon defeats the antagonist, King Galbatorix, with the help of his dragon Saphira and other allies. Eragon establishes a new order for dragon riders and works towards rebuilding Alagaësia. He also leaves Alagaësia to train the next generation of riders, signaling a new beginning for the land.
So far, there has been a 2-3 three year gap between the publications of each of the Inheritance books. The name or an estimated release date for the fourth book has yet to be released.Author Paolini has stated that he came up with about 100 pages of the fourth book while writing Brisingr, so this may possibly speed up the process to some degree.
